Diprivan, the drug found in the late Michael Jackson's home, is a powerful anesthesia used to induce and maintain anesthesia during operations and procedures.
Diprivan, the brand name for Propofol, is a powerful anesthetic used to start anesthesia or keep a patient under during tests, procedures and some surgeries. According to Cindy Adams of examiner.com, Diprivan was found in the home of the late Michael Jackson. Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse and nutritionist who worked with the late singer, told the New York Post that Michael begged for the powerful sedative so that he could sleep. Use of DiprivanDiprivan is a short acting sedative-hypnotic that is used to both start anesthesia and to maintain anesthesia for inpatient and outpatient surgery. It is a fast-acting hypnotic-anesthetic that works for a very short time. It is also very easy to overdose. Use of Diprivan, according to drugs.com must be monitored constantly. The dosing is extremely critical and even a minute miscalculation can result in fatalities Diprivan, if used in conjunction with narcotics, must be monitored closely and the dosing amount reduced. Pharmaceutical recommendations are for this to be done in a hospital setting, preferably and ICU. Abuse of DiprivanAbuse of Diprivan is growing, albeit among a tight community. Due to the difficulty in obtaining the drug, most abuse cases that have been reported have been people in the medical community. In the Examiner.com article, it is noted that researchers studied 29 abuse cases involving Diprivan. Of those, 16 were residents, 6 were physicians, and 3 were anesthesia nurses. 9 deaths due to Diprivan abuse were also reported. Diprivan is a highly addictive drug with a short window. People who are addicted must repeatedly use the drug, often injecting upwards of 100 times during one binge session. The necessity to re-up in order to stay under the effects of the drug makes it easy to overdose and die. Celebrities and PharmaceuticalsDrugs like Diprivan, Dilaudid, Morphine, and others, that should only be available through a doctor and in some cases in a hospital, are often readily available to celebrities and people with enough money to get around the system. Money and fame have set them apart from the general public and somewhere there is a doctor more than willing to prescribe whatever is requested with little regard for the potential fatalities. Anna Nicole, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and many others are victims of their own fame. Diprivan and other drugs have a place in the medical world. Many medical miracles occur because of the drugs available to doctors. But, until society stops placing celebrities on thrones and making them ‘gods’, there will always be doctors and pharmacists willing to get in their good graces and in their bank accounts by supplying dangerous drugs, like Diprivan, to people who have no known need for the drug.
